Serving Sizes
This post is dedicated to all you fitness bloggers who continue to post photos of colourful food. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the food that drives me crazy or the fact that you can’t distinguish between photos of fitness models and anorexic chicks—it’s that you seem to think eating loads of yogurt, fruit, and chicken stir fry is going to help you reach your goal weight.
It’s evident you need to understand exactly what a standard serving size is. Here are some everyday household items to use as a mental reference guide, so the next time you decide to grab that bag of trail mix, you have a better idea of just how many handfuls to eat.
Nuts (1 ounce) = a cupped palm
Cereal (1 cup) = a baseball
Fruit (1 cup) = a tennis ball
Peanut Butter (1 teaspoon) = one die
Salad Dressing (2 Tablespoons) = a shot glass
Beef (3 ounces) = a bar of soap
Fish (3 ounces) = a checkbook
Chicken (3 ounces) = a deck of playing cards
Rice (1/2 cup) = an ice cream scoop
Cooked Pasta (1/2 cup) = a golf ball
Lean Sirloin Hamburger (3 ounces) = a mayonnaise jar lid
Potato/Sweet Potato = a computer mouse
Cheese (1 ounce) = a ping-pong ball
Butter (1 teaspoon) = a Scrabble tile

I have no doubt that the words a father speaks to his daughter are responsible for shaping her self-esteem. This is the earliest memory of my father’s words of affirmation to me.
Dear Mom & Dad…
Thanks for staying as one and keeping our family together. I know it’s pretty rare these days. Happy 44th Anniversary.
My Diet Discoveries
- Green tea tastes yuck.
- Black tea stains my teeth.
- Back to plan A: water. Lots of it.
- Most people who work out eat lots of BB&C: broccoli, brown rice, and chicken.
- I’m not most people.
- Since I believe God made me, I’ll try to eat more of the foods He created.
- Even though I train, I don’t enjoy working out or getting sweaty.
- But I feel as hot as Lara Croft when I’m done and that’s awesome.
- I’d rather track my progress with a measuring tape than with a scale.
- Grazing works so much better and helps me avoid bingeing.
- So does drinking a gallon of water per day.
- Dedication didn’t really happen until I got my mind in the right place. That part took me 12 months.
- Again, I’m not most people. But why else do you think the contestants on The Biggest Loser cry so much??? It’s an emotionally and mentally draining journey.
- My attitude toward myself and my relationship with food has changed.
- My goal isn’t to become a rake. I’d just like to not jiggle so effing much.
- I know I’m not “that round” (for my height), but I don’t want to be “round” at all!!
- Finding healthy versions of my former favourite foods doesn’t work for me.
- Portion control is critical. I’m amazed at how little food my body actually needs.
- I don’t rely on will power because it’s connected to my feelings.
- I never stop “feeling” for a piece of chocolate or a handful of chips. But it’s my mind that stops me and reminds me of what I’ll feel like after I eat it.
- One cheat meal a week definitely helps keep me sane.
- Weekends off from the gym are a much needed break to help me recover.
- It’s more fun when you change your lifestyle with someone else. My husband is the best fitness partner!!!

This clip makes me laugh so much…especially when he yells out, “MAMA!!!”
I love this because it captures exactly how I’ve been feeling about this whole journey. Living a healthier lifestyle isn’t just about losing the physical weight; it’s just as much about dropping all the mental heaviness and stress that so often comes with it.

Don’t know about you, but this song makes me want dance, run, lift, sweat, and basically just MOVE like crazy!!!
